We’ve still got a sh*tload of events covered that came down before The Homecoming but I’m so psyched on this one. So yeah, we’ve got a big feature for MastaPlann and Bambu’s recently-concluded show.
Bambu opened up the night and unleashed his awesome emcee skills. With songs lined up such as The Queen is Dead and Old Man Raps, he graced those in attendance with his dope lyrics and energetic theatrics. Dude knows how to hype up the crowd, I gotta tell you. He went downstage and got close with them silver tix people twice during his set, before joining the crowd once more right after his performance. Dude threw high fives and gave love back for the mad props that all them people have for him as he mingled with the crowd before going backstage for some much-needed rest.
But the real diamonds in his set were the messages that he shared to the crowd. He spoke of being motivated to share stories with his songs because of the direct relation of the problems that Filipinos here and in the U.S. face every day. He also had some words for all them imperialists and got the crowd chanting “Imperyalismo, ibagsak!” There’s still a lot that he spoke of that night which I am thankful for because right then and there, I got that jolt that I need to keep on writing poems to spit and be a purveyor of idealisms that will hopefully influence other people the way that heads like Bambu manage to do.
Another thing that hit me was Bam's concern with us importing stuffs that we can make here. That's one of the reasons why I started Caution Clothing. We can make our own scene of streetwear brands here in the P.I. long as we focus on our creativity. Many of them brands ain't sh*t anyway, all about trash that giant corporations and such throw at us and then count on the masses' ignorance to munch on the hype. Better do our own and let our purposeful intent create products that will showcase real Filipino talent.
And MastaPlann.... hell yeah. Just saying their name yields a sh*tload of great words. One of the biggest pioneers in Pinoy hip hop, they paved the way for people to push for their dreams. And that night, they put on a show for those that look up to them and follow the path that they created.
Their songs also instilled in me a good dose of appreciation for them herb-themed songs. I mean, there’s a sh*tload of fake cats out there singing those kinds of songs that get a hella lot of fanfare. You know, Wiz Khalifa and his ilk. Every day, I witness all these people seeing smoking good sh*t as a fad and posting stuff on facebook. Whatever makes them feel cool, but you get the impression that these same people will ditch it soon as they see a new trend to ride on. But MastaPlann, maaann. Seeing them onstage, I know I was standing before the real deal. Gonna be dope Rolling In The Ride with this heads for sure. And it was nice to hear their classics, too. What with ending their performance with their most popular obra, Bring Dat Booty.
Rye, Ill-J and Dash also held the mic and set the stage on fire with their joints. Too bad my camera run out of battery while shooting some photos as they sing The Anthem. Despite that being the only hassle of the night, it was still gnarly as f*ck. Y’all should’ve been there, period.
